So Barak is now head of the Labor party (again), and Peres is now President of Israel. Hooray, what amounts to Israel's center-left can look forward to yet more years of political whoredom. Low on principles, long on longevity (especially Shimon).
I mean, really, after Camp David tanked under Barak's watch and he got demolished by the right for offering "too much" to Arafat, how can he realistically promise anything without getting hammered by them? And in the meantime, as he tries to placate the right by seeming tough on terror, he's going to be alienating the left. Peres has long since stopped making promises about anything; at this point he doesn't have to. People expect him to be skulking around the Knesset somewhere. The only bright point about Peres becoming Prez is that he'll hopefully be able to do less damage there.
Ayalon at least was a relative newbie to the job and might have injected some fresh blood and ideas into Labor (as, admittedly, the hope was with Peretz). With the old guard back, what hope is there of ANY change for the better? Labor's going to be out in the political wilderness for at least five years, maybe ten, depending on when Olmert folds and Bibi makes his comeback.
Jesus. Barak and Bibi. Didn't we see this movie already?
Someone please go find Amram Mitzna and bring him out of retirement. Then all we need to do is kidnap Peres and Barak and hold them for a few weeks until party elections. Let's call Meir Amar, I'm sure he could hook us up.
